The Colour of Sound: A Multi-sensory Exploration of Chromesthesia
Project type
Projections
Date
January 2025 - August 2025
Location
Liverpool John Moore's University
"The Colour of Sound" immerses the audience in a multi-sensory environment where sound, colour, and motion come together to revel the unique perception of Chromesthesia.
This ongoing installation employs Ferrofluids in a petri dish, which are manipulated by sound waves, through electromagnetism, activating dynamic, flowing patterns of colour, that are then projected onto walls.
Initially projected within the X-Gallery in the John Lennon Art and Design building with the help of advisor Mark Wright, Lecturer/Senior Lecturer and recently projected in the Simulation Suite, within the LJMU Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science building, with the help of advisor John - Paul Mills, Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Simulation.
These fluid projections act as a metaphor for the synesthetic experience, where music, voices and sounds become vivid, and often overwhelming waves of colour. The installation aims to bridge the gap between the auditory and visual worlds, offering a unique sensory journey. The immersive projections are multisensory, combining high-definition imagery with binaural beats to engage both sight and sound simultaneously.
While for those without the Chromesthesia, it offers the opportunity to experience the world of a Chromesthete, in a visceral, and immersive way, fostering a deep appreciation for the complex ways in which out senses interconnect and shape our understanding of the world around us.
