ChromaFlow
Hello
Victoria Iddon, a current master’s student, studying Art in Science, at Liverpool John Moore’s University. An artist and researcher exploring the intersections of sound, movement, and visual art. Creating work driven by the idea that art is not just something to be observed but something to be experienced—an evolving, immersive interaction between materials, space, and perception.
Currently, developing a project that integrates ferrofluids, electromagnetism, and digital art to create dynamic visual and immersive environments. A key focus of this work is chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia in which sound is perceived through involuntary triggers as colour. Through collaboration with an individual who experiences chromesthesia, the aim is to translate the sensory perceptions into moving imagery, aiming to blur the boundaries between sound and vision, by combining artistic intuition with scientific principles, the work seeks to expand the ways in which audiences engage with multisensory experiences.
Introduction into ChromaFlow
I am a interdisciplinary artist, and through my practice ChromaFlow, I aim to transform live music into a moving visual performance, using acrylic paint, and ferrofluids, magnetic fluid that responds in real time to sound through electromagnetic vibrations, reimaging the chromesthetic experience.
My work blends science, technology, and sensory perception to challenge traditional artistic boundaries and create immersive, multi-sensory experiences. This project is a co-collaboration (Brown, M. 2014) with Louie Burns who has Chromesthesia, a rare sensory phenomenon where sounds trigger the perception of colour. (Exceptional Individuals. 2023) and Phil Iddon, a Telecommunication Expert and musician.
Louies unique experience provides crucial insight into how we can visualise sound in a way that goes beyond metaphor, translating it into a dynamic, interactive installation, and without Phil's input the technical side of this project would not be possible.
At the heart of this project is a simple but mind-bending question: how can we, as artists, create work about a condition we do not experience ourselves, and is co-collaborating with those who do the most authentic way to translate its manifestation?
Key Aims & Objectives for ChromaFlow
-
Translate Sound into Motion & Colour – Develop a visual and kinetic representation of sound using ferrofluid and projection.
-
Bridge Art & Science – Explore how physics (magnetism and fluid dynamics) and sensory perception can inform artistic practice.
-
Engage Audiences in Multi-Sensory Perception – Create an installation where sound is something you can see and feel.
-
Investigate Chromesthesia in an Artistic Context – Collaborate with a Chromesthete to explore whether sound-colour associations can be made accessible to a wider audience.
-
Experiment with Materiality & New Media – Use non-traditional artistic tools like electromagnets, ferrofluid, and projection mapping to create an innovative art experience..
